Arkansas AMI

The Division of Secondary and Elementary Education and Arkansas PBS have partnered to support teachers, families, and students by providing Arkansas AMI Learning Guides associated with PBS educational programming. Beginning March 30, Arkansas PBS will alter its regular television programming to provide age-appropriate educational content for three specific grade bands (PK-2, 3-5, 6-8). The Arkansas AMI Learning Guides have been developed to support home-based instruction in association with the PBS educational television programs to promote activities that students and families may use to practice existing skills, learn new topics, and interact with one another in a meaningful way.

Alternative Methods of Instruction (AMI)

Act 862 of 2017 allows a public school district and open-enrollment public charter school to develop a plan for alternative methods of instruction to be used on days when the superintendent closes school due to exceptional or emergency circumstances.  As stated in the legislation, the Commissioner of Education may grant up to the equivalent of ten (10) student attendance days for public school districts that have an alternative instruction plan approved by the commissioner for the use of alternative methods of instruction, including without limitation virtual learning, on days when the public school district is closed due to exceptional or emergency circumstances such as: a contagious disease outbreak, inclement weather, or other acts of God; or a utility outage. The public school district’s alternative instruction plan shall demonstrate how teaching and learning in the public school district will not be negatively impacted by the use of alternative methods of instruction.

This initial application is for five (5) AMI days. Additional AMI days (up to a total of ten (10) per school year) may be requested by submitting a letter of amendment explaining the exceptional or emergency circumstances to Tracy.Webb@arkansas.gov.

Submission Instructions:

  • Complete the AMI Application for the current year to submit the details of your plan.
  • E-mail completed applications to ADE.AMIapplication@arkansas.gov.
  • The deadline for applications to be submitted is May 1, 2020.
  • Applications will be reviewed in the order they are received.  Incomplete or partial applications will not be reviewed.
  • Notification of status will be sent via email to the superintendent at the address provided on the application.
  • Approval is granted for the current school year only. Applications must be renewed annually.
