Literacy Screening Tools
Universal screening is a critical first step in identifying students who are at risk for experiencing reading difficulties and who might benefit from increased intensity and duration of literacy instructions. Universal screening assessments are brief and conducted with all students within a grade level. The American Institute for Research classifies Literacy Screening Tools based on the research results that determined each tool’s effectiveness around generalizability, reliability, and validity. The charts provided indicate the extent to which a screening tool is able to accurately classify students into “at risk for reading disability” and “not at risk for reading disability.”
Reading and Writing Progress Monitoring
The National Center on Intensive Intervention has created a chart that assists educators and families in selecting progress monitoring tools that best meet the individual's need in reading and/or writing.
Literacy Learning Progressions
Literacy Learning Progressions is a web-based tool to help educators understand, prepare for, and teach to the Arkansas State Standards in English language arts and literacy by identifying the grade level standards before and after the identified standard. The website can also help teachers identify the grade-level where students are currently functioning in a specific area of literacy.
