Fine Arts

Engagement in artistic processes allows Arkansas students to develop and realize their creative potential, explore other times and cultures, think critically and creatively, and enjoy a satisfying lifetime of artistic practices. This engagement leads students toward artistic literacy and helps to fully prepare them for college, careers, and civic engagement. The Division of Elementary and Secondary Education, by providing rigorous academic standards in the arts, ongoing training and support for arts educators, and opportunities for collaboration with community artists and arts organizations, strives to ensure that every student in Arkansas has access to a well-rounded education that includes excellent and equitable high-quality arts learning experiences.

Standards and Courses

The Arkansas Fine Arts Curriculum Frameworks reflect the best contemporary philosophy and practices in arts education, provide courses that meet the needs of Arkansas students, and offer consistency of format and content across all disciplines and all levels. Updated in 2020 by a committee of arts educators representing all arts disciplines, all grade levels, and all areas of the state, the following standards allow students to create and perform or present original artistic work, as well as to respond and connect their own artistic work to that of other people and other cultures.
Schools should begin implementation of the new standards in the 2020-2021 school year with full implementation by the beginning of the 2021-2022 school year.
