Literacy Design Collaborative/Mathematics Design Collaborative

In 2011, the Literacy Design Collaborative and Mathematics Design Collaborative began with five pilot districts around Arkansas. Since then, over 70 literacy, science, math, and career tech specialists from local Education Service Cooperatives, STEM centers, and Education Renewal Zones have trained over 2,000 teachers in over 240 schools and 170 school districts.

LDC and MDC shifts the focus of teacher-centered instruction to student-centered tasks. Teachers are making a big commitment as they learn how to develop a module or facilitate a Formative Assessment Lesson to get away from the “traditional” lecture-type instruction. The payoff comes from seeing students engaged in learning and taking ownership in their instruction.

Certified LDC Coaches deliver professional learning opportunities in blended formats that personalize teacher learning and build capacity across the state. Teachers of all contents/disciplines learn to plan instruction according to Arkansas Standards within a backward design framework that supports student-focused learning. provides an online learning tool with CoreTools in which teachers share, design, publish, adapt, and teach nationally vetted mini-tasks and modules.

A recent case study by Research For Action in Kentucky found that LDC enabled students to “unpack” the final writing assignment prior to starting the module. This allowed students to have a deeper understanding of how the smaller mini-tasks build up the skills of the students to be prepared for the end product. In MDC, students were able to, “engage in mathematical discussions, facilitate group work, provide opportunities to reason through difficult math problems, and explore multiple pathways to arrive at the right solutions.”
