On March 8, 2023, Gov. Sarah Huckabee Sanders signed Act 237, known as the Arkansas LEARNS Act, into law. The Arkansas LEARNS Act is bold and comprehensive and will transform education in Arkansas.

Philanthropist and education visionary Lowell Milken launched the 2023-24 Milken Educator Awards today in Springdale, Arkansas, with the presentation of a $25,000 Award to Hellstern Middle School mathematics teacher Michael Tapee. Arkansas Governor Sarah Huckabee Sanders and Department of Education Secretary Jacob Oliva joined Milken to surprise Tapee with the Award before cheering students, proud colleagues, dignitaries and media. Tapee can use the cash prize however he chooses.

“The letter grades are of significant importance to families, as they serve as an easy-to-understand metric for how schools are performing,” ADE Secretary Jacob Oliva said. “While we are pleased that a majority of schools’ grades held steady or improved, we still have a lot of work ahead to ensure all students are reading on grade level and are prepared for college, career, and life. We are confident that the implementation of LEARNS will bring improved results this next school year.”

The Arkansas Martin Luther King, Jr. Commission and community partners will host several Nonviolence Youth Summit activities on Sept. 28-30 in Pine Bluff. An opening session will begin at 9 a.m. Sept. 28 at the Pine Bluff High School Gymnasium, 711 W. 11th Ave., Pine Bluff. During the session, Arkansas Department of Education Secretary Jacob Oliva will announce the winners of the Pine Bluff High School “I Have a Dream” Youth Essay Contest. A ribbon-cutting ceremony with the Pine Bluff Regional Chamber of Commerce to promote economic development, community service, and a partnership with the city will occur at the end of the 9 a.m. session. Educational sessions for youth that promote mental health, financial literacy, and nonviolence will follow.
