ADE Announces Cyber Security Course Pathway

 
The Arkansas Department of Education’s Office of Computer Science is pleased to announce that ADE is partnering with the Arch Ford Education Service Cooperative’s Virtual Arkansas division, the University of Arkansas at Little Rock, and the University of Central Arkansas at Conway to develop a three-year cyber security curriculum and course pathway that will be available to Arkansas public school students at the beginning of the 2020-2021 school year.

2020 Computer Science Educator of the Year Award Cycle Announced

Gov. Asa Hutchinson and the Arkansas Department of Education are once again searching for the best computer science educator in the state. Applications are now being accepted for the Arkansas Computer Science Educator of the Year award for the 2019-2020 school year.

 
 
The Arkansas Out of School Network (AOSN) is pleased to announce a new partnership with the Arkansas Department of Education (ADE) Office of Computer Science (CS) and the Arkansas Regional Innovation Hub at Winrock International to establish an Arkansas robotics competition for students grades four through eight. The partnership will also establish a startup grant for afterschool programs to receive equipment for the competition.
 
 
 
 
The Arkansas Department of Education (ADE) Office of Computer Science is pleased to announce its support for up to 35 Arkansas educators to attend the 2020 Computer Science Teachers Association (CSTA) Annual Conference in Arlington, Virginia. The purpose of these sponsorships is to provide financial assistance to Arkansas educators assisting them with expanding their knowledge of computer science and networking with other educators from around the world through the unique experience of the CSTA Conference.
 
 
 
 
 
The Arkansas Department of Education Office of Computer Science is happy to announce its support and participation in an innovative cybersecurity training partnership with the SANS Institute, the largest provider of cybersecurity training and certification for professionals in government and commercial institutions worldwide. The partnership aims to inspire the next generation of cybersecurity professionals and identify talented youth in Arkansas. Open to female high school students, the Girls Go CyberStart initiative encourages participants to explore their interests in cyber studies, learn core cybersecurity skills, and build confidence in problem solving. - www.girlsgocyberstart.org

Competition That Combines Coding and History Announced for Middle School Students

The Great Arkansas History Video Game Coding Competition will begin in January 2020. Open to students in grades 4-8, the competition emphasizes storytelling, state history, and coding and gives students the ability to use their coding abilities while supporting literary growth and expanding their knowledge of Arkansas history.

The Arkansas Department of Education (ADE) Office of Computer Science is pleased to announce the continuation of its cross initiative program supporting both the Arkansas Computer Science (#ARKidsCanCode / #CSforAR) and Arkansas Reading Initiatives (#RISEArkansas). In the first two years of this program approximately 900 K-8 public school libraries received coding devices and coding related books. For 2019, additional computer science and computing related books will be distributed to public school libraries around the state.

The Arkansas Department of Education, Arkansas State University, and the Arkansas Public School Resource Center announced a partnership program to provide a statewide online coding curriculum starting with the fall 2020 semester. The first offering of its type to the high school students of Arkansas, the UpSkill program is designed to support the Governor’s initiative on computer science skills.  The course structure leads students through a nine-month curriculum that prepares them to receive a certificate in Swift coding.

Creation of the Arkansas Students of Distinction in Computer Science Recognition Program

The Arkansas Department of Education is looking for outstanding students who have demonstrated their commitment to computer science education. Through the Arkansas Students of Distinction in Computer Science Recognition Program, up to 50 public and private school, as well as homeschool students, currently in grades 11 or 12 will be recognized for their efforts in computer science education.
