National Assessment of Educational Progress (NAEP)

The National Assessment of Educational Progress (NAEP) is administered periodically to a representative sample of students at grades 4, 8, and 12 in core subject areas. As the only ongoing, nationally representative assessment of what America’s students know and can do, NAEP provides valuable information about student achievement at both the national and state levels.

NAEP results are reported through The Nation’s Report CardTM, which informs the public about the academic performance of elementary and secondary students across the United States. The assessment serves as a consistent measure of student achievement over time, allowing for comparisons across years and jurisdictions.

NAEP is congressionally authorized and administered by the National Center for Education Statistics (NCES), part of the Institute of Education Sciences within the U.S. Department of Education. The Commissioner of Education Statistics oversees the implementation of NAEP, while the National Assessment Governing Board sets policy and determines the content and achievement levels for the assessment.

Since 1969, NAEP has assessed students in subjects including reading, mathematics, science, writing, U.S. history, civics, geography, and others. NAEP reports results at the national, state, and selected urban district levels, making it a critical component of the nation's efforts to monitor educational progress. The assessment collects only academic achievement data and related background information, and the privacy of individual students and families is strictly protected.

The most recent NAEP results for Arkansas provide insight into student performance trends and help inform state-level education policy and decision-making.
