Key Levers Walkthrough Tool, One-Pagers

The Division of Elementary and Secondary Education (DESE) has developed a set of powerful data tools centered around five key impact areas: Structures of Learning, Aligned Content, Teacher Instructional Practices, Student Practice, and Assessment & Differentiation. Each area includes clear “Look Fors” to guide classroom observations and support instructional growth. These tools help educators and leaders track progress toward our shared vision, every Arkansas student achieving proficiency in reading, math, and science, while identifying opportunities to coach and support teachers more effectively.

Below, you’ll find one-page summaries of the key instructional levers by grade band. If you’re looking for a more detailed version of these tools, please contact the Math Department.

Math 5 R’s for Active Student Engagement

The Math 5 Rs outline five essential habits of mind that empower students to think, talk, and work like mathematicians. These practices, including Resilience in Problem-Solving, Reasoning about Quantities and Relationships, Reflecting through Discourse and Precision, Representing with Tools, and Recognizing Structure and Patterns, support deep engagement and meaningful learning in math classrooms. Explore each “R” to see how they foster active student thinking and build a strong foundation for lifelong mathematical understanding.

Parent and Community Support

These easy-to-use, double-sided one-pagers are designed to help parents support their child’s math fluency and foundational skills at home. Each guide explains key grade-level expectations and offers simple, engaging activities that families can use to reinforce learning through everyday practice. Whether it’s building number sense, practicing basic facts, or using objects to solve problems, these tools make it easier for parents to stay involved in their child’s math journey.
